What We Can Learn from Other Tribes — A Yoruba Perspective
There’s no doubt that the Yoruba tribe stands out in many ways. If we are to measure the essence of a tribe in its entirety, values, heritage, character, and culture, Yoruba remains one of the finest. The Omoluabi ethos, which speaks of integrity, respect, and responsibility, is a core value that defines us and sets us apart. But as proud as we are of our identity, we must also acknowledge that every tribe has something unique and valuable to offer.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on the strengths of others.
The Hausa People:
One of the most admirable qualities of the Hausa tribe is their unwavering loyalty and unity. A Hausa man will go to great lengths for his people and for what he believes in. The moment you speak their language, you’re considered family. Their deep sense of communal support is so strong that if a Hausa man is leading a team or project, it’s almost guaranteed that 70% of the team will be made up of fellow Hausas. That’s how committed they are to uplifting their own.
The Igbo People:
The Igbos are powerhouses of enterprise and business. Their determination to succeed financially is unmatched. Even if it means starting from the bottom or taking a low-profit job, they’ll do it, because for them, every step forward matters. They are known to take calculated risks, invest wisely, and compete healthily, all in the name of progress. Their entrepreneurial spirit is a lesson in resilience and ambition.
Of course, no tribe is without its flaws—ours included. But that should never stop us from learning from one another. Rather than focusing on our differences, let’s take the best from every culture and incorporate those values into our own lives.
Let’s be proud Yoruba people who are also humble enough to appreciate and adopt the good in others.
